Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a directive, client centered style of interviewing and counseling - a state-of-the-art, evidence-based counseling style for evoking intrinsic motivation for positive behavior change in brief encounters. Originally developed in the drug and alcohol field, MI is now being widely applied in a variety of settings including health care, criminal justice, mental health and coaching.
This intensive workshop will introduce participants to the theory, principles, and skills of MI. Participants will be guided through a sequence of learning activities to initiate a process for developing proficiency in MI. Included will be demonstrations, video examples, case studies, "real-plays", small group exercises, didactic presentation and participant practice with feedback. This workshop provides participants all skills and knowledge needed to continue "learning to learn MI" for proficiency.
Key knowledge acquired:
- Limits of persuasion and an "action oriented" paradigm
- History and research supporting MI
