Green Building Certificate Program
Distance Learning Partnership with Colorado State University-Pueblo (CSU-Pueblo)
St. Edward’s University Professional Education Center is partnering with CSU-Pueblo's distinguished Green Building Certificate distance learning Program. The program is directed by Dr. Larry Grosse, Emeritus Head of the Department of Construction Management at CSU, a nationally recognized leader in construction management education and green building.
“This is an exciting time in the building industry. LEED-guided, healthy, high-performance buildings are quickly becoming the standard for progressive cities, school districts, and the private sector,” said Dr. Grosse. “This 8-week certificate program responds to the growing need for specially-trained professionals who are able to adapt to a changing industry and culture. For those who work in the design and construction industries, this certificate can greatly increase their competency and ability to contribute, collaborate, and advance.”

The Certificate Program begins October 1 and is geared towards:
- Design professionals – interior, landscape, architectural
- Contractors and builders, planners and commissioners
- Facility managers and stakeholders
- Built Environment engineers and decision-makers

Course Outline
Introduction to Green Building and LEED for New Construction Test
This class will provide an introduction to sustainability by
discussing the principles of sustainability and green building.
The class will cover the US Green Building Council,
LEED Rating Systems and green building resources.
Sense of place: Site development and sustainable
landscapes
Sustainable site selection, design and development will
be addressed in this class. Sustainable sites will address
building orientation, sustainable landscapes, storm water
management, strategies for reducing the heat island effect
and light pollution.
Integrated energy systems, Energy efficient design,
indoor environmental quality and commissioning
Energy efficient design will be discussed addressing
integrated design, energy efficient mechanical systems
and balancing energy efficiency with indoor environmental
quality. An overview of the steps and importance
of the commissioning process will be given.
Environmentally smart materials: Exterior and interior materials, construction, deconstruction, reuse and recycling.
This class will cover green material practices for the design, specification and construction of sustainable structures. Green material attributes, costs, will be addressed as well as deconstruction and construction waste reduction practices.
Indoor environmental quality materials, occupant health and comfort
The discussion of sustainable materials selection will continue in this class as material selection is viewed from a point of indoor environmental quality. Indoor environmental quality, occupant health, and productivity will be addressed.
Economics of green building, ongoing sustainability, exam prep and commencement
The final class in the Green Building Professional Course will focus on making the business case for green building and maintaining and operating a building for ongoing sustainability. An overview of the course will be given focusing on the final preparation for the LEED Green Associate exam.
NOTE: The classroom with be conducted via videoconferencing with the University of Colorado-Pueblo and Mesa State University.

If a written withdrawal request is received within 5 calendar days after the first class meeting, you may receive a refund less a $150 withdrawal fee to cover the administrative cost and printed material. (Non-attendance does not constitute a withdrawal.) This is a special cancellation policy offered only for this class. Our standard policy appears on the registration form.
